Trip Overview

Tibet Overland Tour takes us to all the interesting places of the city of temples, Asia’s prominent valley. Its itinerary also heads off to Nagarkot, Nepal’s best viewpoint to see the Himalayas. It also takes us to the edge of the ridge next day to show the mountains, stretching from east to west. It makes us drive in the highest tableland of the world, and it takes us to the highest pass of the world; and it makes us visit the famous Potala Palace of Tibet.

Its itinerary makes us stop by the Turquoise Lake to look at its beauty for a long time. The scenery of what we have seen changes dramatically as the snow-covered mountains surround our road to Lhasa, and we step into the famous historical monuments of Xigatse and Lhasa to be the part of the ancient Tibet history.


Outline Itinerary

  • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, meet at the airport and transfer to Hotel.
  • Day 02: Kathmandu – sightseeing overnight in a hotel
  • Day 03: Nagarkot – sightseeing overnight in a hotel
  • Day 04: Dhulikhel – sightseeing overnight in a hotel
  • Day 05: Drive Dhulikhel to Kodari (6 hrs). After immigration and custom formalities, drive to Zangmu. overnight in a hotel
  • Day 06: Drive to Tingri (4342m/8 hrs) overnight in a hotel
  • Day 07: Drive from Tingri to Xigatse (3900m/8 hrs) overnight in a hotel
  • Day 08: Sightseeing of Xigatse and drive to Gyantse. (3950m/3hrs). overnight in a hotel
  • Day 09: Drive Gyantse to Lhasa (3650m/8 hours) overnight in a hotel
  • Day 10: Sightseeing tour of Drepung & Jokhang Monasteries and Barkhor Market overnight in a hotel
  • Day 11: Sightseeing tour of Potala & Norbulingka Palaces and Sera Monastery. overnight in a hotel
  • Day 12: Drive to Gonggar airport and fly out to (Kathmandu or Chengdu, 1 hr 20 min) for onward journey. overnight in a hotel
  • Day 13: Kathamndu – leisure time overnight in a hotel
  • Day 14: Departure to connect next destination or you may extend the trip as per your desire and time
Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, meet at the airport and transfer to Hotel.

Upon arrival at the Tribhuwan International Airport, a representative from Himalayan Waves carrying a placard will receive you. Private transportation to the office or directly to the hotel if arrival is late at night is arranged by the representative. At the office we proceed to discuss about the travel plans and introduce the trek guide through a meeting. We recommend you to bring your passport along with 3 passport sized photos and a readable copy of the travel insurance to swiftly proceed with permit papers and other arrangements. During the meet, you can also ask the guide and the manager any questions regarding the trip. Any overdue balance is to be cleared along with the filling of legally binding trip form and non-liability disclaimer form. Overnight stay in a hotel (Bed and Breakfast).


Day 02: Kathmandu – sightseeing overnight in a hotel

After breakfast, we will visit the following places with a city guide.

Swayambhunath: This is a Buddhist stupa which lies on the top of a hill and offers a whole view of Kathmandu city.

Boudhanath: This is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world.
Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred temples of the Hindus.

Day 03: Nagarkot – sightseeing overnight in a hotel

Nagarkot is a hilly village, and from here, we see breathtaking mountain scenery and the most impressive views of the sunrise and sunset.

Day 04: Dhulikhel – sightseeing overnight in a hotel

Dhulikhel is an old Newari town, located 32 km east of Kathmandu. From Dhulikhel, we can see a panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges.
There are also options of hiking from Dhulikhel, for instance, half-day hiking or full-day hiking. Dhulikhel is also famous for a sunrise view.

Day 05: Drive Dhulikhel to Kodari (6 hrs). After immigration and custom formalities, drive to Zangmu. overnight in a hotel

In the early morning, we wake up and take a packed breakfast from a hotel and drive to Kodari (border of Nepal & China). Our border representative will help us to get an official entry to Tibet and China.

Day 06: Drive to Tingri (4342m/8 hrs) overnight in a hotel

We drive in a 4 wheel vehicle on a hilly road. We reach the Tibetan Plateau, and on the way, we see Shisha Pangma, cross the La Lung-La Pass, and the Tong-La Pass.

The scenery changes dramatically. While driving uphill, we see the breathtaking view of the Himalayas, including Cho Oyu (8201m) and Xixapangma (8012m). From Tingri, the view of Mt. Everest (8,848m) is exceptional.

Day 07: Drive from Tingri to Xigatse (3900m/8 hrs) overnight in a hotel

We drive to Xigatse which is the second largest city in Tibet, and which is the capital of Tsang.

Day 08: Sightseeing of Xigatse and drive to Gyantse. (3950m/3hrs). overnight in a hotel

At Xigatse, we will visit Tashilunpo monastery. In this monastery, we will see the statue of Maitreya - the "Future Buddha", and then we drive to Gyantse in the afternoon and visit its Phalkor Monastery, Kumbum Stupa.

Day 09: Drive Gyantse to Lhasa (3650m/8 hours) overnight in a hotel

We head off to Lhasa through the Karo La Pass (5010m) and Kamba La Pass (4794m). The Karo La climbs between two lofty mountains, Nozing Khang SA (7223m) and Ralung (6236m). On the way, we come across Yamdrok Tso (Turquoise Lake).

Day 10: Sightseeing tour of Drepung & Jokhang Monasteries and Barkhor Market overnight in a hotel

We will visit Jokhang Temple and Barkhor market. Lhasa is a fascinating modern city. There are many wonderful things to see and do in Lhasa.


Day 11: Sightseeing tour of Potala & Norbulingka Palaces and Sera Monastery. overnight in a hotel

Potala Palace measures 400 m east-west and 350 m north-south with sloping stone walls averaging 3 m. thick, and 5 m thick at the base, and with copper poured into the foundations to help proof it against earthquakes. Thirteen stories of buildings—containing over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues—soar 117 m on top of the Red Hill.
We visit the Norbulingka Palace which is a traditional summer residence of Dalai Lama.
Sera monastery encompasses 28 acres of land and houses several institutions. The structures of notability are the Great Assembly Hall, colleges, and Kamcun. In the main hall, we see the scriptures of the gold powder, statues, scent cloth, and murals.

Day 12: Drive to Gonggar airport and fly out to (Kathmandu or Chengdu, 1 hr 20 min) for onward journey. overnight in a hotel

From one of the highest airports in the world, we fly to Kathmandu, the city of temples.

Day 13: Kathamndu – leisure time overnight in a hotel

We can spend the time in our own way.

Day 14: Departure to connect next destination or you may extend the trip as per your desire and time

We are picked up from the hotel and transferred to Tribhuwan International Airport three hours before our flight.
