Trip Overview

The top of Mt. Kailash is flat because the Hindus believe it is the place where Lord Shiva resides with his wife Parvati. This is the reason, why Mt. Kailash is a sacred mountain to the Hindus. This mountain is also sacred to the Tibetan Buddhists. That’s why; they do Kora or circumambulation of this mountain. The Hindus also do circumambulation, and this is known as parikrama in Hindi.

It is said that a single Parikarma erases all the sins of a lifetime while 108 circumambulations achieve salvation. The 53 km Kailash Circuit is the holiest of all pilgrimages to the Hindus, as well as of Buddhist pilgrimages, and it is also the beacon which draws most travelers to the western Tibet.
