Trip Overview

If the northern Nepal is famous for mountain climbing and Himalayan trekking in the world, then the southern Nepal is famous for bird watching. Godavari, a botanical garden, situated close to Kathmandu, is also famous for bird watching. The Chitwan National Park and the Kosi Tappu of the southern Nepal are homes to some of the most fascinating birds in the world.

In the Kosi Tappu, one can see a lot of migratory birds. Some birds that we see in Nepal are Chestnut-capped Babbler, Small Pratincole, Blue-bearded Bee-eater, River Lapwing, Long-tailed Shrike, Emerald Dove, White-browed Wagtail, Collared Falconet, Changeable Hawk-eagle, Brown Crake, Red Jungle fowl, Indian Peafowl, Striped Tit-babbler, Jungle Owlet, Black-rumped, Himalayan and Greater Flamebacks, Red-headed Trogon, Small Minivet, Spot-winged Starling, Pale-footed and Spotted Bush-warblers, Grey-headed Woodpecker and so on.

Detail Itinerary

: Outline Itinerary of the Bird watching in the Chitwan National Park


Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, meet at the airport and transfer to Hotel.

After arriving at Tribhuwan International Airport, we will see the representatives of Himalayan Waves with their signboard. Then, we will be taken to their office in a private transportation. If we arrive late at night, the representatives will take us to a hotel.

If we go to an office, we will have a meeting, and we are introduced to our trekking guide. In this meeting, we have to show our passport, give 3 passport-sized photos, and produce a readable copy of our travel insurance; we can also ask a guide and a manager any questions about our trip, as well as we have to clear all our due balance, sign a legally binding trip form, and a non – liability disclaimer.
Stay overnight in a hotel. (Breakfast provided)


Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to the Chitwan National Park overnight in a hotel

After breakfast, we drive to chitwan, located 175 kilometers from Kathmandu. We drive along the winding road that passes through hills and valleys and that runs by the Trishuli River.
Stay overnight in a lodge. (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided)


Day 03: Chitwan, Full day wildlife activities – Chitwan National Park overnight in a hotel

We will do an elephant ride in a jungle through dense grassland to see the Royal Bengal Tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, buffaloes, deer, and so on. After breakfast, we visit elephant stables, and if we get an opportunity then we will bathe the elephants. Besides this, we also do a nature walk, one of the activities.

Day 04: Chitwan (Bird watching) overnight in a hotel

Today, we will be taken to the Rapti River for bird watching. Here we can view a host of astonishing birds which include the Chestnut-capped Babbler, Small Pratincole, Blue-bearded Bee-eater, River Lapwing, Long-tailed Shrike, Emerald Dove, White-browed Wagtail, Collared Falconet, Changeable Hawk-eagle, Brown Crake, Red Jungle fowl, Indian Peafowl, Striped Tit-babbler, Jungle Owlet, Black-rumped, Himalayan and Greater Flamebacks, Red-headed Trogon, Small Minivet, Spot-winged Starling, Hill Myna and Chestnut-crowned, Pale-footed and Spotted Bush-warblers. A lot of ponds are present within the reserve.

Around such ponds, we can see a lot of extraordinary species like the Crested Serpent-eagle and Grey-headed Fish-eagle, Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Puff-throated Babblers, Lesser Coucal, Speckled Piculet, Greater and Lesser Yellownapes, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Great Hornbill, Green-billed Malkoha, Red-breasted and Blossom-headed Parakeets, Jungle and White-bellied Yuhina, Crimson Sunbird, Streaked Spiderhunter and perhaps Black Baza.

Day 05: Drive from Chitwan to Kathmandu overnight in a hotel

Day 02: Godavari and Phul Chowki overnight in a hotel

We move to the Godavari Botanical Garden for bird watching. We will then hike up to Phulchoki. 90 species of birds have been recorded in this area. If the weather permits us, we can reach the top and can have the opportunity to see great vistas, of mountains from Dhaulagiri Himal to Mt. Everest.

We will see a lot of local species, such as Rufous-bellied, Crimson-breasted Woodpeckers, Rusty-cheeked Scimitar-babbler, Rufous Sibia, Rufous-winged, Nepal and White-browed Fulvettas, Green-tailed Sunbird, Cutia, Blue-winged Minla, Stripe-throated and Whiskered Yuhinas, Red-flanked Bluetail, White-browed Bush-robin, Dark-throated Thrush, Grey-winged and White-collared Blackbirds, Buff-barred and Black-faced Warblers and so on.

Day 03: Shivapuri overnight in a hotel

In the morning, we set off to the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve situated 12 km north of Kathmandu.

Some of the birds that we see in this area are the Laughing Thrush, Crested Serpent Eagle, little Pied Fly Catchers, Rupy-throats, and Babblers. At Nagarjuna at 2105 meters, pheasants, magpies, sunbirds, and ruby throats are found.

Day 02: Koshi Tappu overnight in a hotel

Today, we will head off to the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve which lies to the eastern part of Nepal. The drive will take us about 6 hours on the east west highway.

The Koshi Tappu Reserve is a home to the last surviving population of wild buffalo, which is called Arna in Nepali.. The reserve is home to rare birds like the Bengal florican and Sarus Crane and more than 400 species of birds have been recorded here including migratory species from Siberia and Tibet.

Day 03: Koshi Tappu to Kathmandu overnight in a hotel

In the morning, we will do some more bird watching and then head off to Kathmandu.
